North American Buffalo is a distributor of quality buffalo meat serving Western Canada. All our meat comes from the Irish Creek Bison Ranch located in Alberta. Irish Creek is one of the top breeders in Canada. Our goal is to provide a wholesome and tasty alternative to red meat eaters.

Buffalo or Bison

North American Buffalo and Bison are the same thing and the names are used interchangeably. The scientific name is Bison and it belongs to the Bovidae family, the same one domestic cattle belong to.

North American Buffalo
Years ago, North America's largest land animal dominated our continent but early settlers, for various reasons, reduced historical counts of 50+/- million buffalo to almost nil. But now over 300,000 buffalo ranchers have helped to bring back these noble creatures.

Our ranchers raise their buffalo on large rolling prairie range land. Actually the buffalo's old 'stamping grounds'. They roam again thriving on these large ranches where there are quiet gullies, pure water and 'tame' grass. Because of these natural and stress-free habitats the opportunity is ours once again to enjoy prime red meat at its best. Two to three year old bulls are fed 60-90 days of grain prior to slaughter. Thus, bringing from 'pasture-to-plate', what we believe to be the best flavoured and nutritious 'red meat' back to our individual lodgings.

All our North American buffalo are carefully tagged for proper breeding control and to assure the best ongoing blood lines. Unfit or poor quality buffalo are culled from the herd and disposed of. Our buffalo are never treated with antibiotics, stimulants or hormones. As our early forefathers, who knew nothing of the foregoing drugs, we can confidently enjoy a quality red meat again. No need to worry of human intervention.

A special thanks to the Alberta Bison Association for providing information and some pictures.
